UN Joint Global Programme on Cervical Cancer Prevention and Control

Overview

Worldwide, 266,000 women died of cervical cancer in 2012– equivalent of one women dying every 2 minutes. And 90% of these deaths were in low- and middle-income countries.

But the truth is that almost all of these deaths could be avoided if all adolescent girls were immunized against  human papilloma virus (HPV)   and cervical screening and treatment of pre-cancerous lesions were available to all women
